Dr. de la Maza is a physician and filmmaker originally from Chile. He is currently earning a Masters in Health Education & Health Communication from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Before moving to Baltimore with his wife and two children, he worked as a pediatric emergency physician for five years in his home country.  In addition to his work as a clinician, Javier is also an accomplished director with more than ten years of experience producing audiovisual content for medical education, including his award-winning documentary film, “Ars Medica”, which compiles stories about physicians and their lifetime experience practicing the art of medicine.   He also serves in the organizing committee for APHA’s Global Public Health Film Festival,  and was recently appointed the president of the Johns Hopkins Public Health Film Society.   As a graduate fellow of the Center for the Medical Humanities & Social Medicine, Dr. de la Maza is developing a project that seeks to promote the arts in medical education. His work was awarded with funding by the 2018 Idea Lab Ten by Twenty Challenge, a grant competition that supports social innovation at The Johns Hopkins University.
