Kreszentia Hankins

Acrylic on canvas, 2024

A few medical students claim an afternoon off from study in the gorges of Watkins Glen, New York. For them, this rigorous hike comes as a physically and emotionally restorative frolic. A few hours in, one of them spots a leaning tree, perfect for lounging, overlooking the brilliant green water. She takes a pause, captured here.

Medical students face a paradox: we learn so much about the maintenance of patients’ physical and psychological health, yet in an environment that facilitates neglect of our own well-being. Any time for healing or leisure must be sought out deliberately, and can feel difficult to justify in the face of mounting responsibilities. Building periods and spaces for rest becomes a necessary skill. This scene layers several types of rest, both in activity and repose.

Kreszentia Hankins is a second-year medical student in Elmira, New York. A Michigan native, her work has been displayed at SocraTea Detroit, The Loft Fine Art, and the Michigan Renaissance Festival. Ever-exploring the practice of work-life-balance, she is committed to having a nice time.
